In my 35 plus years of racing I have been DQ'd at the scales for equipment failure but I have never been DQ"d for contaminated fuel. We were checked at the end of the event and that is what was found. The fuel was cloudy. Although it passed the test for additives and it passed the smell test, it was cloudy and WKA has an alcohol policy that it must be clear. It is my own fault because I haven't taken the time as I have in the past to pull fuel from the tank and check it for clarity. Here is what you should do every now and then and especially if you are running a big race. Get a clear glass and pull some fuel from your tank. Then add the same amount of water ( they say distilled but I have never had a problem using regular water that has no smell to it). Shake it up and wait for it to settle to clarity. If it is as clear as the alcohol was without the water you are good to go. If it is cloudy you have a contamination of some kind. Many times fuel will get contaminated by using an oil funnel or even a gas funnel. So you need to have a separate funnel for alcohol. Here is what I think may have happened to us. We power wash the karts every week after the race. My son places a baggy over the cap of the tank to keep moisture out. When we are done we remove the baggies and blow dry everything. Then we start them and build heat then put them in the trailer until the next event. This time he didn't remove the baggie from the fuel tank and the kart sat in the trailer for 4 weeks as he was in a job transfer and couldn't race. It was during that heat wave we were having and I didn't vent the trailer like I should have. I think this is where we got the fuel cloudy. I could have questioned the call because there were no additives found through the testing at the track and the fuel did smell as alcohol should but I just walked away as a gentleman. My mistake for not making sure I was legal to start the evening. So, take a lesson from my mistake and check your alcohol.
